Photo is of Donald Frederick Ashby (1914-1943), a member of staff of the department, leading the Easter field trip to Arran at Easter 1943. Later that year, he was accidentally drowned near Bont-ddu, in the Barmouth Estuary, at the tragically young age of 28. The Donald Ashby Memorial Prize is awarded annually to the best final year student.
